Training
- January 1st, 2010
At Glenmar Farms we train all breeds of horses with Natural Horsemanship methods and work with both the horse and rider. Our speciality is producing and training horses to be safe, willing, quiet Trail horses that are a pleasure to ride.
We also do Colt starting , Foundation training for all disciplines and work with problem horses..
Our approach to horse training:
Glenmar Farms is not a “Drop off your horse and hope for the best” training facility. We are dedicated to working with both you and your horse to correct any problems you’re having and improve your relationship with your horse. All owners are encouraged to be here as much as possible to participate in their horse’s training.
Our training philosophy is based on gaining your horse’s respect and trust through the use of specific groundwork exercises. Then we move on to excercises under saddle that will teach your horse how to be light and responsive to the slightest cue. And as part of our training program, you will be instructed on how to do these exercises yourself at home so your horse will continue to be a willing, respectful partner in the future.
Because every horse is different and owners vary in what level of training they want or need for their horses, we base our training fee by the week. In general, and depending on the horse, it takes approximately 4-6 weeks to get a horse respectful and responsive and going good under saddle in all three gaits. We usually have them doing some trail riding by then, also.
For an inexperienced rider, a very green horse, a colt that’s just been started, we usually recommend at least 6-8 weeks to get the horse really quiet and safe both in the arena and out on the trails.
For horses that are basically broke to ride but may just be lazy, unresponsive or real “chargy” or spooky, it may only take 2-3 weeks to eliminate the problem. Some more minor problems, like difficulty in trailer loading, standing tied, no go, too much go, etc., can often be overcome in less than two weeks!
So, rather than a generic training course for every horse, we customize the training to the owner’s desired achievements. This way, the owner gets exactly what they are looking for in the shortest amount of time and at the lowest possible cost.
Training includes
- Full Board : grain & hay twice/day.
- 5-6 training sessions/week. Sessions last between 1.5 and 2 hours long.
$175.00/week (training, full board and teaching owner to do the exercises we have taught your horse)

I have a group of friends who I trail ride with every weekend. We were looking for something new to do with our horses and found Glenmar Farm. I contacted Marilyn and arranged for us to come out and try out the obstacle course. Marilyn also offered us the use of the roundpen and full size arena. Marilyn met us in the driveway and helped us park and start our day. The roundpen and arena were great!! We worked our horses before tackling the obstacle course. I have to say that I was a little leary driving an hour away to ride at a place I had never been, over obstacles I had never ridden before. Marilyn took us out to the obstacle course and introduced us to each element. We had a range of experience in our horses/riders. One a young mare, three seasoned veterans and 1 horse that my friend had just bought a week 1/2 earlier. The course was AWESOME. We spent over 2 hours riding on the course. Each element had a lot of thought put into it and a great reason for being an element on the course. My mare – Maggie – loved the bank element and the teeter/totter bridge. Fun was had by all and I practically had to drag everyone off the course to go home. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Glenmar to anyone who wants to try something different with their horse. It created a lot of confidence in the horses and riders. Thank you Marilyn for having us out!!! We will return!!!!
I had a wonderful time working my way through the obstacle course!! It was a fantastic experience that boosted my confidence in my horse and my horse’s confidence in me!! I highly recommend the experience to everyone who trail rides!!!
After just a few lessons, I can see major improvements in my horse and IN ME. She is more respectful and more responsive! I am more relaxed and in-tune with my horse. Each session with Marilyn is very informative and I can see the results!! Thank you so very much!!
